Brief testing Pika - is it worth it?

Jodie Parkin

As part of week 6 of the skills network digital marketing course, we looked at an AI video generator and were asked to blog our thoughts on the software. So here are my initial thoughts...

I found the AI video generator to be a fascinating tool that has the potential to revolutionise the way we create content. It was impressive to see how the software could quickly and easily generate videos with minimal input from the user, however, the quality of the video is somewhat lacking.

Pika's interface is user-friendly and uncomplicated, making operating a breeze. The explore and library buttons provide seamless navigation between examples and user-generated videos. The straightforward design of Pika not only makes it easy to use but also an enjoyable and engaging experience.

Although the software is user-friendly, there is room for improvement. A great way to reduce user frustration and time wasted could be by incorporating an information button that offers helpful tips and explanations. Additionally, a step-by-step or walk-through guide can lead users through the process, ensuring they achieve their desired outcome easily.

My Generated Videos

Recently I made and sold a crochet dinosaur so I used this as my inspiration for my AI-generated videos with the intention that making this could be an ad on my Instagram page to inspire more sales.

Pixar-style

The target audience for my crochet animals is children so I opted for a Pixar style. This is where my earlier comment about the videos lacking quality shows. The first prompt I used was "Crochet dinosaur looking for forever home finds a little girl to play with".

This created a Pixar-style dinosaur reminiscent of Toy Story's characters but did not resemble the original crochet prompt. Additionally, the generated videos are only three seconds in length. While there is an option to add four seconds, it requires regenerating the video and doing so after every new generation to obtain a longer video may prove to be a time-consuming process. Furthermore, adding four seconds does not seem to enhance the overall story.

Another option to create a story is to generate different scenes that could be edited into a short story. So my next step was to try and create other scenes that matched this style. so I used other prompts such as:

  • "woman crocheting, Pixar style"

  • "crocheting, Pixar style"

While examining AI-generated pieces, I noticed a distinctive "Pixar style". The generator seemed to take characters and scenes from Pixar films and make minor adjustments. It's important to note that these similarities may pose a challenge if you intend to use this content professionally as it could infringe on copyright laws.

No Style Prompt

Due to the possibility of infringing on copyright laws, I decided to test what Pika would generate without a style of animation attached using a simple prompt: "Crochet dinosaurs hugging".

A simple prompt created a simple but creepy video! Although I received a video that closely mirrored my prompt, it turned out to be unsettling and not the kind of child-friendly content I hoped to promote my product.

Using my image

The last thing I wanted to test out on this brief trail with Pika was creating an animation using the image that I had taken of the product recently sold.

I like the idea of bringing still images of the product to life through animation but was left feeling underwhelmed by the outcome.

I took out my phone and scrolled through my photo gallery until I found the image I was looking for. It was a picture of the product that I had recently sold, taken from an interesting angle that I thought would look great in animation but there was hardly any movement in the image and also it was on its side, maybe I had not adjusted the sizing correctly but this proves my point about a walk through guide being helpful to a user.

Overall

Is it worth it? I can say it is fun and interesting to use and see the technical advances that AI brings to the table but I am not convinced this is suitable for professional ads ... yet!

AI, or artificial intelligence, has been making waves in various fields, including advertising. While it is exciting to witness the technical advancements that AI can offer, some may question if it is truly worth it. Despite its potential benefits, there are still some concerns that need to be addressed.

One of the main issues with AI in advertising is its ability to create original content. While AI can generate content quickly and efficiently, there is still a risk of it copying existing imagery. This poses a challenge for advertisers who want to create unique and original content for their campaigns.

However, it is important to note that AI technology is still relatively new and has a lot of room for improvement. As advancements continue to be made, we may see AI becoming more reliable and effective in creating original and engaging content. Until then, it is up to advertisers to weigh the benefits and limitations of using AI in their campaigns.
