Ever had someone tell you, you can't do something? It's a common experience for many people, including myself. Like most people, I grew up in a family where the motto was “There is no such word as can't”. Due to being diagnosed with cerebral palsy at a young age and my parents hearing from doctors that I wouldn't be able to walk, talk, or attend a regular school. But guess what? I defied expectations and even earned a first-class honours degree. When someone tells me that I can't do something, my response is always "Watch me." It may require a different approach or thinking outside of the box, but I'm determined to find a way.
So, how did I end up in the world of content creation and digital marketing? After graduating from university, I faced the same job hunt as any other recent graduate. However, because of my physical disability, I encountered the question in interviews: "Is this industry suitable for you?" eventually I began to wonder if the Film and Television industry was ready for someone like me and decided on a new path. I know not quite the "what me" attitude I usually had.
But then, I had a lightbulb moment. What if I could be part of the change? What if I could help make industries more accessible to everyone, no matter their circumstances? That's when I landed a role managing the social media and supporting the launching of a new accessible website for the local government's SEND education department. Which then led me down a path to digital marketing, it became clear to me that the way we market and advertise can unintentionally exclude those with different abilities. However, with digital marketing, we have the power to create an inclusive environment for all.
